Teaching objectives

At the end of this class, students are expected to be able to:

observe, feel, appreciate and imitate some useful lexical chunks to express dos and don’ts.

use lexical chunks to compose a short paragraph on cultural differences.

learn some cultural differences around the world.

Class model

This is a flipped classroom teaching model. Students learned with the help of printed learning material in advance. Then the teacher collected their materials. During the class, we mainly focus on sharing what students learned, appreciating students’ homework and guiding students to solve their questions.

Learning strategies

Two effective ways of learning lexical chunks:

Learn them deep into their functional meaning;

Classify them into different functional families.

Important teaching points

How to use various lexical chunks to express dos and don’ts

Difficult teaching points

How to classify lexical chunks in terms of their function, rather than their literal meaning.

Teaching method and teaching flow

This teaching plan will be carried out mainly by means of task-based approaches and Inquiry Teaching method.

Student’s presentation ---homework appreciation---Test whether students can apply the new way to lexical chunk learning---Use lexical chunks to compose a paragraph on cultural difference.

Teaching steps

Step 1:

Play a short video about cultural differences. And ask students what kind of cultural differences it reflects.

Step 2:

Ask a student to make a presentation on cultural differences. This is intended to give students a chance to display their English talents.

Step 3:

Ask students what lexical chunks they have learned by themselves in their learning materials.

Step 4:

Share some good sentences written by students in their learning materials.

Step 5:

Ask students what they learned in Exercise 2 Task 3. This task is meant to test whether they have the ability to rearrange the lexical chunks with the new learning method. Then the teacher will guide them to sort the lexical chunks into two categories and let them make sentences according to pictures.

Step 6:

Present a short paragraph on cultural difference written by the teacher, with several lexical chunks learned used. Then ask each student to write one and select the excellent works to display on the projector.

Step 7:

Homework: Write a composition using as many lexical chunks expressing dos and don’ts as possible on any topic you want.
